We designed a frame that could tour and respond to each new opera. Manchester made use of a fabric membrane that became a screen, and gateway from dreamer to dream. The same membrane was used in Nottingham and attached to the inside of the framework to become a mystery light box. We removed the fabric in London and relied on playful stations signs with rules that reimagined how to behave in public. The flowers were plucked and removed through the show leaving just the tall grasses, in order to mark the shift from blossoming youth to the wilderness of older age. All characters are hiding personal struggles and dreams sequences and flashbacks appear abstractedly to break an otherwise linear narrative. Our approach was to hold onto this abstraction in order to show the intimacy and tenderness visible in Joy’s relationship with herself, Winston’s desire for connection and Claire’s search for the truth. The minimal set helped to evoke driving at night with a painterly monochrome floor within the long thrust stage. The costumes are embedded within the overall palette. Abstracting the crash using stylised lighting and movement helped to bring a visual poetry to a defining moment within the production. Set and Costume designer. Lighting.
